Brief

If you're running a business in India, you've probably heard about GST registration. It's not just a formality—it’s a way to officially bring your business into the tax system. Whether you're selling products, offering services, or operating through an online platform, registering under GST gives your business a legal identity and opens the door to several benefits.
You can register voluntarily, even if your turnover is below the threshold. Many businesses do this to build trust with clients and suppliers, and to claim credit on the GST they pay for purchases. But for others, registration isn’t optional—it’s mandatory once you cross certain limits or operate in specific ways.

GST registration isn’t optional for everyone—it becomes compulsory once certain conditions are met. The law makes it clear that businesses crossing specific turnover limits or operating in special categories must register under GST.

- Goods suppliers must register if their annual turnover goes beyond ₹40 lakhs (or ₹20 lakhs in special category states).
- Service providers must register if their turnover exceeds ₹20 lakhs (or ₹10 lakhs in special category states).
- Any business selling through an e-commerce platform like Amazon, Flipkart, or similar marketplaces must register, no matter their turnover.
- A Casual Taxable Person, who sets up a temporary business in another state (like a trade fair or exhibition stall), also needs registration.
- A Non-Resident Taxable Person, meaning a foreign entity supplying goods or services in India, must register before starting operations.

Who Needs to Register?
GST registration becomes compulsory in a few key situations:
- If you're selling goods and your annual turnover goes beyond ₹40 lakhs (or ₹20 lakhs in special category states)
- If you're offering services and your turnover exceeds ₹20 lakhs (or ₹10 lakhs in special category states)
- If you’re selling through an e-commerce platform like Amazon or Flipkart
- If you're a casual taxable person—someone doing business temporarily in a different state
- If you're a non-resident taxable person—a foreign entity supplying goods or services in India

Why GST Registration Is Good for Business
- It gives your business a formal identity
- You can legally collect GST from customers
